Dragons Den star Deborah Meaden fired off a letter on PETAs behalf to Chief Executive Mark Tanzer of travel association ABTA urging him to include sees to marine parks to its list of inappropriate practices, writing:
The more we find out about these complex and extremely intelligent animals, the more abhorrent their captivity for human entertainment looks. The proof is clear: whales and dolphins, whether captive-bred or wild-born, do not– and can not– grow in captivity.
In her letter, Meaden also keeps in mind that ABTA has noted direct contact in between elephants and travelers as an “undesirable” practice since 2019 and asks that cetaceans get the very same consideration:
Following talks with PETA, a long list of business have stopped promoting SeaWorld, including Your Co-op Travel, British Airways Holidays, Virgin Holidays, STA Travel, Premier Holidays, and TripAdvisor.
Orcas in nature type complex relationships, pass through up to 140 miles of ocean each day, and live in close household groups that share a culture and language. At marine parks like SeaWorld, the animals are housed in cramped tanks in incompatible groups and denied whatever thats natural to them.
