A wave of severe cold is sweeping through the country, leaving many people feeling as though they have caught the “worst cold ever”.

After being locked down under Covid restrictions for almost two years, Brits are mingling freely again which has inevitably allowed different viruses to circulate as they did before the pandemic.

Facebook users from Hull and East Yorkshire have shared on the social media platform how they have been impacted by the acute strain of cold.

One said: “It floored me. Shocking thing it is.”

“Felt shocking. The cough and bad breathing no energy at all,” another commented.

A third said: “I’ve had a cold for coming up three weeks and chest infection. I can’t shift it, been on antibiotics and even them haven’t shift it.”

The nation has been social distancing for almost two years and wearing face masks in public, resulting in everyone missing out on catching different colds.

Immunity cannot be developed if you don’t catch them, which means when viruses eventually reach you, symptoms are likely to be more severe.

Dr Philippa Kaye told BBC Newsbeat: “We’ve actually been seeing a rise in the number of coughs and colds and viral infections.

“We are mixing in a way that we haven’t been mixing over the past 18 months.”

Colds can be treated at home with rest, fluids and over-the-counter painkillers, Dr Philippa added.
