A Saudi Arabian-backed takeover of Newcastle United has been completed today after the Gulf state lifted its four-year ban on the Qatari broadcaster beIN Sports.

The £300 million takeover, confirmed by the Premier League this evening, has provoked a furious reaction from human-rights groups.

Newcastle supporters, however, have been celebrating, hoping that it will give the club similar spending power to Manchester City and Paris Saint-Germain, owned by Abu Dhabi and Qatar respectively, and because it has brought an end to the 14-year reign of Mike Ashley, the owner. It should also lead to Steve Bruce, the head coach, being replaced.

Ashley washed away all hope – it’s no surprise fans don’t care about sportwashing
