Retailer WH Smith has purchased 18 Dixons Travel stores, including at significant airports, as it bets on a travel rebound and broadens its US InMotion tech and devices organization into the UK.
In April, Dixons Carphone validated strategies to close its 35-strong airport store service Dixons Travel after it was hammered by the pandemic and the end of tax-free tourist shopping.
WH Smith is now catching half of those shops, at sites consisting of London Heathrow, London Stansted, Manchester, London Luton, Birmingham and East Midlands, which it expects to deliver sales of around ₤ 60m a year.
WH Smith prepares to take on around 200 of the 400 Dixons Travel personnel who were affected by the closures.
WH Smith purchased United States airport-based retail giant InMotion in late 2018 in a deal that doubled the size of its global travel service.
At the time, InMotion was the biggest airport-based digital devices seller in North America, with 750 personnel and 114 shops throughout 43 airports in the United States.
WH Smith stated sales remained under pressure, with total group incomes at 62pc of 2019 levels in the 18 weeks to July 3.
In the UK, the merchant said travel sales have enhanced to 38pc of 2019 levels in the week to July 3 as constraints have eased.
