Martha Is Dead will be censored on the PlayStation 5 and PS4, publisher Wired Productions has announced. The potentially “distressing” horror game will release unedited on other platforms, like Xbox and PC, but the company states that “it is with regret we have had to modify the experience [on Sony’s consoles] with some elements no longer playable”.

We’ve reached out to the organisation to try and get clarification of what has actually been changed and why, and will update if and when we receive a response. Some fans hypothesise that the modifications may relate to a scene in which you’re required to surgically remove a corpse’s face, which you then proceed to wear as a mask. Grim stuff!

Still, that doesn’t seem much worse than anything depicted in Mortal Kombat 11 or even Sony’s own The Last of Us: Part II, both of which are grotesquely sadistic at times and available uncensored on PlayStation platforms. Again, we’re awaiting confirmation of exactly what’s been changed, so it may be worth keeping your pitchforks down – at least until we have the full picture.

As a result of the last-minute changes, the physical version of Martha Is Dead has been delayed, although the digital version will still be available on the PS Store from 24th February. According to Wired Productions, it anticipates the retail release to be available within weeks of its originally intended release date, so it’s not like there’s going to be a huge postponement if you prefer to own your games on Blu-ray.
