Arsenal striker reported Villa and Leeds target

Aston Villa have been linked with a shock move for Arsenal striker Eddie Nketiah.

Journalist Ekrem Konur is reporting that Villa and their Premier League rivals Brentford and Leeds United are showing an interest in the player.

Nketiah, 22, has struggled to make his mark in the Premier League and he is out of contract at the end of the summer.

Arsenal reportedly set a price tag of £20 million on Nketiah as clubs in the Premier League and abroad chased him during the summer transfer window.

He has been limited to one Arsenal appearance this season, the 3-0 defeat of AFC Wimbledon in the Carabao Cup earlier this month.

The former Leeds United loanee has not been in a single matchday squad for Arsenal this season, but did make 29 appearances last season, scoring six goals.

Dean Smith makes Buendia admission

Aston Villa head coach Dean Smith claims that he has strong squad depth ahead of the clash with Tottenham Hotspur this weekend.

The Villa boss suggested that having the luxury of bringing on club record signing Emiliano Buendia in the second half of the win over Manchester United last time out demonstrates the strength in depth of his squad.

Buendia replaced striker Danny Ings at Old Trafford and nearly made an instant impact by assisting Jacob Ramsey late in the game but the midfielder lost his footing after being picked out by Buendia inside the penalty box.

Ahead of Villa’s trip to Nuno Espirito Santo Santo’s Tottenham this Sunday, Smith has hinted that Ings and striker partner Ollie Watkins won’t play every game together with the former Brentford manager having so many options available within his squad.

Watkins and Mings earn Three Lions call-ups

Aston Villa striker Ollie Watkins has been named in the England squad for next month’s World Cup qualifiers against Andorra and Hungary.

Gareth Southgate’s Three Lions continue their quest to make the World Cup in Qatar next month with games on Saturday week and the following Tuesday.

Watkins returns to the England fold having been called up in March, when he scored on debut against San Marino, and for the Euro 2020 warm-up games in June.

Now he is back in the fold at the expense of Patrick Bamford with the Leeds United striker missing out having been included in the most recent squad.

Watkins is fit again having begun the season with a bruised knee and he has played every minute of Villa ‘s last three games, though he is yet to score in the Premier League.

Tyrone Mings has also been included in the squad, the Villa captain now a mainstay of England camps having taken the armband from Jack Grealish following his move to Manchester City in the summer.

Villa and Liverpool fans agree on Solskjaer question

Aston Villa fans spotted a peculiar moment during Manchester United’s defeat of Villarreal in the Champions League on Wednesday night.

United needed a winner in the fifth minute of injury time to beat their Spanish visitors to Old Trafford, Cristiano Ronaldo netting his fifth goal on his return to Manchester.

He was set up by Jesse Lingard, who appeared to be obstructing Villarreal goalkeeper Geronimo Rulli as Ronaldo slotted home.

United’s last Premier League match, a 1-0 defeat to Villa on Saturday, saw Kortney Hause score the winner in the 88th minute.

That goal was deemed controversial by Red Devils boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer who said the header should have been disallowed for offside because, when Hause headed at goal, Ollie Watkins was in front of David de Gea in an offside position.

United’s goal and the potential for an offside call was not lost on Villa fans, who took to social media to ask the question.
